Założyciel i lider Teatru ZAR, reżyser, aktor, dyrektor Instytutu Grotowskiego. Odznaczony brązowym medalem Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis (2022)

Pełnił funkcję przewodniczącego Rady Kuratorów i kuratora ds. teatru Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury Wrocław 2016. W latach 1999–2002 zrealizował szereg wypraw do Gruzji, Armenii i Iranu, prowadząc poszukiwania w obrębie najstarszych form muzyki chrześcijańskich kościołów wschodnich. W kolejnych latach wspólnie z członkami Teatru ZAR organizował wyprawy badawcze na grecką górę Atos, Sardynię i Korsykę, do Armenii, Turcji i Izraela. Reżyser pięciu spektakli zespołu. Tryptyk „Ewangelie dzieciństwa” był pokazywany m.in. w Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atenach, Belgradzie, Edynburgu, Florencji, Madrycie, Paryżu, Sybinie oraz Kairze, Nowym Delhi i Seulu.

W 2013 roku ukończył pracę nad spektaklem „Armine, Sister„, dedykowanym historii, kulturze i ludobójstwu Ormian, do którego oprócz reżyserii opracował oryginalną dramaturgię muzyczną i specjalną architekturę. W 2016 roku zrealizował spektakl „Medee. O przekraczaniu” z udziałem śpiewaczek z Kairu, Teheranu i Stambułu. Wykłada i prowadzi warsztaty w Polsce i za granicą, był wykładowcą m.in. w Państwowej Wyższej Szkole Teatralnej im. Ludwika Solskiego w Krakowie Filii we Wrocławiu.

Uhonorowany przyznawanym przez magazyn „Los Angeles Times” tytułem Best New Music Theater (2009) i Wrocławską Nagrodą Teatralną za tryptyk „Ewangelie dzieciństwa” (2010). Spektakl „Cesarskie cięcie. Próby o samobójstwie” w jego reżyserii zdobył Total Theatre Award w kategorii Physical/Visual Theatre oraz Herald Angel Award podczas Festiwalu Fringe w Edynburgu w 2012 roku. Pomysłodawca i koordynator licznych projektów realizowanych w Polsce i za granicą w ramach działalności Instytutu Grotowskiego, m.in. Roku Grotowskiego UNESCO 2009, programu „Masters in Residence”, Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Teatralnego „Świat miejscem prawdy”, a także Olimpiady Teatralnej Wrocław 2016. Członek zarządu Międzynarodowego Stowarzyszenia Liderów Teatru (International Association of Theatre Leaders (IATL) powołanego w 2022 roku w Hongkongu.

Jarosław Fret is a founder and leader of Teatr ZAR, theatre director and actor as well as the Director of the Grotowski Institute. In 1999–2002 he organized a series of expeditions to Georgia, Armenia and Iran, conducting research into the oldest forms of religious music of Eastern Christianity. In the following years, together with members of Teatr ZAR, he led expeditions to Mount Athos in Greece, Sardinia, Corsica, Armenia, Turkey and Israel. He has directed several performances, concerts, films and an opera. Teatr ZAR’s Gospels of Childhood triptych has been seen in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Athens, Belgrade, Edinburgh, Florence, Madrid, Paris, Sibiu, Cairo, New Delhi and Seoul. In November 2013 he completed work on Armine, Sister, for which he developed an original musical dramaturgy and special stage architecture. In 2016, Medeas. On Getting Across, a performance dedicated to the rejections and migrations, has premiered during Theatre Olympics in Wrocław, later presented in Warsaw, Thessaloniki, Madrid and Paris. He lectures and leads work sessions in Poland and abroad. His awards and honours include: Best New Music Theater for Teatr ZAR from “Los Angeles Times” (2009); Wrocław Theatre Prize for the Gospels of Childhood triptych (2010); the prestigious Total Theatre Award for Physical/Visual Theatre and the Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2012). He has originated and coordinated numerous Polish and international projects of the Grotowski Institute, including the Grotowski Year 2009, Masters in Residence, the International Theatre Festival The World as a Place of Truth and the Theatre Olympics 2016 in Wrocław. Member of the executive board of the International Association of Theater Leaders (IATL) established in 2022 in Hong Kong.
